Philips Semiconductors’ complete
cable system solution eases the path to production-ready set-top boxes (STBs)
for the low-end cable market. Drastically reducing time-tomarket and
development costs for the introduction of new STB systems, it allows
manufacturers, OEMs and ODMs to focus their resources on added-value features
and product differentiation.
Philips
Semiconductors’ cable system solution brings value and brand differentiation to
low-cost DVB-C applications. A turnkey system solution for digital cable
reception, it enables manufacturers, OEMs and ODMs to bring low-cost DVB-C STBs
to market quickly and easily.
It is based
on the PNX831x MPEG-2 source decoder, the highly integrated TDA8274HN silicon
tuner and the TDA10023HT DVB-C channel decoder. Together, the TDA8274HN and
TDA10023HT offer a sophisticated yet cost-effective receiver for digital cable
tuning and decoding. The PNX831x provides single-chip media processing and
control for low-cost digital STBsystems. Combined with the UDA1334BTS low-power
audio DAC, these ICs form a highly affordable and extremely efficient solution
for a variety of digital STB and TV applications.
As part of
a complete development roadmap, this system solution provides the ideal
starting point for introducing consumers to digital TV. Highly programmable, it
frees equipment manufacturers from continual system re-design and enables
development to be concentrated on added-value and branding features. It also
provides the freedom to create products tailored to specific requirements,
offering manufacturers the flexibility and potential to build multi-market
products such as combined DVD+RW/DVB systems.
With the
rapid growth in the Indian and Chinese markets, Philips Semiconductors allows
OEMs and ODMs to target these huge markets with a limited R&D outlay and
still deliver a cost-effective solution in a very short time frame.

Philips Semiconductors’ cable system
solution provides a comprehensive package, including key ICs, reference board,
software (drivers and adaptation layer) and third party applications
(Middleware), as well as Philips world-class logistics and quality management.
The system is completed with software stacks including Graphical User Interface
(GUI) applications. In addition, Philips can provide technical support for customers
wanting to port their own applications onto the final product.
TDA8274HN multi-standard silicon tuner
A giant leap forward in RF integration, the
TDA8274 features an embedded low-noise input amplifier and an image rejection
mixer for processing RF signals. It also downconverts signals to low IF before
filtering and sending them to the channel decoder. The TDA8274 delivers optimal
partitioning of functions at the system level, removing the need for both SAW
filters and IF amplifiers. All this integration results in very low power
consumption so external heat sinks are not required, further simplifying the
design-in process.
Offering the necessary selectivity for all
targeted applications, the TDA827x silicon tuner also features a fully
integrated VCO with no external tank component, removing the need for
high-voltage tuning of the oscillator. It also includes an RF splitter with two
separate outputs, and an RSSI signal indicator embedded on the IC.
• Real silicon
tuner approach: Only 30 SMD components for the Bill of Material (BOM)
• Wideband
low-noise RF amplifier with AGC
• RF splitter
with 2 separate outputs (-2 / +6 dB)
• RF filter
• Image
rejection mixer stage
• Fully
integrated VCO
• Integrated
16 MHz crystal oscillator and output buffer to channel decoder or other tuner
• I²C bus
controlled
• 40-pin metal
lead-frame HVQFN40 package (6 mm x 6 mm)
TDA10023HT DVB-C channel receiver
The TDA10023HT is a single chip
cable channel receiver for 4, 16, 32, 64, 128 and 256 QAM modulated signals. It
interfaces directly to the IF signal, which is sampled by a 10-bit
analog-to-digital converter. The chip performs both clock and carrier recovery
functions, with programmable digital loop filters allowing their
characteristics to be optimized according to the current application.
• Fully compliant DVB-C (Annex A and C) and MCNS (Annex B) decoders
• Multiple TS JQAM filter
• 4/16/32/64/128/256 QAM demodulator
• High performance for 256 QAM for direct IF applications
• On-chip 10-bit ADC and PLL for crystal frequency multiplication
• Digital filtering embedded to interface seamlessly with the TDA827x
silicon tuner family
• Carrier recovery acquisition range +/- 15 % of symbol rate
• Clock recovery acquisition range up to + 12 %
• Auto-scan compatible (software to be developed)
• Double AGC loop structure with programmable take over points
• Automatic Nyquist filter gain setting
• 26 taps integrated adaptive equalizer (Transversal or DFE)
• Simultaneous parallel and serial transport stream outputs
• Works with a low frequency crystal: typically 16 MHz or lower
• CMOS 0.16 µm / 1.8 V (core) & 3.3 V (periphery) technology
• TQFP 64 package (10x10 mm) fully pin-to-pin compatible with the
former TDA10021
UDA1334BTS low-power audio DAC
The UDA1334BTS is a low power
